Our Story
At Gerber&Co, our story begins under the vast skies of Namaqualand, a place as unforgiving as it is beautiful.
In the early 1900s, my grandfather Eli was just three years old when he took his first night watch over the family’s sheep. Wrapped against the freezing darkness, he patrolled for jackal on the edge of the desert. His parents were dirt-poor migrant farmers, and their small flock was all they had. It was in these harsh conditions that he learned resilience, resourcefulness, and the belief that “where there’s wool, there’s a way.”
Born in a humble tent on a dusty track, ‘Oupa’ Eli would go on to become a successful lawyer and sheep farmer. But it was his legacy of perseverance and tough love that shaped who we are today.
Nestled in the rugged heart of the Northern Cape, our farm, Nuwe Era Boerdery, spans more than 40,000 hectares across Namaqualand, Boesmanland, and the Hantam Karoo. Here, a flock of thousands of hardy Namaqua Merino sheep thrives on sparse grazing and endless horizons. The desert offers no shortcuts. But it rewards those who stay the course with something rare: wool of extraordinary purity and softness.
We are committed to growing this legacy sustainably. Through our innovative Wool Syndicate breeding program, we are working toward a vision of expanding our flock to 100,000 head, always with respect for the land, the animals, and the generations to come. Every fleece is hand-shorn and certified by the Responsible Wool Standard (RWS) and Cape Wools Integrated Production of Wool, ensuring that every strand meets the highest standards of ethics and quality.
From our farm, each bale journeys to our modern scour facility in Paarl, where the wool is cleaned and prepared with the same care it was raised. In every fibre, you will find the spirit of our home: the resilience of the sheep, the strength of our people, and the hope of a community building a better future together.
